Window replacement

Window Replacement Cost Calculator

Installed-cost estimate for residential window replacement by count, frame material, glazing, and install type.

Quick answer: $450–$900/window vinyl double-pane Low-E. 14 windows ~$6,500–$13,000 vinyl, $13,000–$25,000 fiberglass, $18,000–$35,000 wood-clad. Energy savings alone rarely justify the cost — insulation + air-sealing is 5–10× better $/return.

vs single-pane (ENERGY STAR estimate)

Reality check: windows have the worst payback of any envelope upgrade — typically 20–40 years on energy savings alone. The right reasons to replace windows are: (1) rot or air leak you can’t fix otherwise, (2) noise reduction, (3) aesthetics / curb appeal, (4) you’re doing a major remodel anyway. If your only goal is energy savings, insulation and air-sealing are 5–10× better $/return.

  • · NFRC label on every unit (U-factor, SHGC, VT, AL).
  • · U-factor ≤ 0.30 for ENERGY STAR (≤ 0.25 in cold climates).
  • · Argon or krypton gas fill, not air.
  • · Warm-edge spacer (not aluminum) between panes.
  • · Manufacturer warranty: 20-yr glass seal, lifetime frame (transferable a plus).
  • · Install warranty: 1-5 yr workmanship from installer.
  • · Flashing detail: house wrap and pan flashing under sill, sealed.

When to replace windows

The honest answer is: rarely on energy savings alone. ENERGY STAR-replaced windows save $8–$15/year per window vs single-pane, meaning a typical 14-window project pays back in 25–40 years on energy. The right triggers are: rot or operable hardware failure you can’t fix, persistent drafts you’ve been unable to seal, intolerable street/neighbor noise, or full-home remodel context. For pure energy efficiency, attic insulation + air-sealing + duct sealing return 5–10× better. Use this calculator as a planning range when the decision is already justified for other reasons.

Frequently asked questions

How much does window replacement cost in 2026?

Per-window installed cost: vinyl double-pane Low-E $450–$900, triple-pane $650–$1,150. Fiberglass $700–$1,600. Wood-clad (Andersen, Marvin, Pella) $950–$2,200. A typical 1,800 sqft home with 14 windows: $6,500–$15,000 in vinyl, $13,000–$25,000 in fiberglass, $18,000–$35,000 in wood-clad.

Is replacing windows worth the energy savings?

On energy alone, no — payback is typically 20-40 years per ENERGY STAR data, $8–$15/yr saved per window vs single-pane. The right reasons to replace are (1) rot/air leaks you cannot fix otherwise, (2) noise reduction, (3) aesthetics, (4) full remodel context. If energy savings is your goal, insulation and air-sealing are 5-10x better $/return — see /insulation-cost-calculator/.

Vinyl, fiberglass, wood, or aluminum?

Vinyl: cheapest, no maintenance, 20-30 year life, dominant residential choice. Fiberglass: premium, longest life (40+ years), best dimensional stability for big windows. Wood-clad (aluminum or vinyl exterior + wood interior): premium aesthetic, requires interior maintenance but lasts decades. Aluminum: hot-climate or commercial, high thermal conductivity (poor insulator) unless thermal break is engineered in.

Double-pane vs triple-pane?

Double-pane Low-E with argon fill is the 2026 standard — U-factor ~0.28-0.30. Triple-pane drops U-factor to ~0.18-0.22 (35-40% better) and helps significantly in IECC zones 5+. Triple adds $200–$400/window and 25% more weight. Worth it in cold climates; overkill in zones 1-3.

Is there a federal tax credit for windows?

The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covered ENERGY STAR-certified windows at 30% up to $600/yr through 2025-12-31. OBBBA terminated 25C for property placed in service after that date. State and utility rebates vary — Mass Save $50–$150/window typical, Xcel programs $100/window. Check /rebates/ before assuming.
