Water Softener + Whole-House Filtration Calculator

Cost calculator for water softeners, salt-free conditioners, whole-house carbon, RO, and iron filters. By hardness tier and state.

Quick answer: basic salt softener $800–$2,000 installed. Premium (Kinetico, Culligan) $2,300–$6,000. Combo softener + carbon $1,800–$4,800. Recommended before any HPWH or tankless install in hard-water areas.

HPWH compatibility

✓ Recommended before HPWH

Hard water shortens HPWH coil life ~30%

Why softener pairs with HPWH: heat pump water heaters circulate water through small-diameter copper or stainless coils that scale faster than tank elements. Installing a softener before a HPWH retrofit often pays back through extended equipment life. Same logic for tankless gas — manufacturers void warranties if hardness exceeds 7-10 gpg without treatment.

New to water treatment?

Water treatment encompasses softening (removing hardness minerals), filtration (sediment, chlorine, taste), and specialized removal (iron, sulfur, contaminants). The right system depends on your water source (municipal vs well), measured hardness, and what you care about. In hard-water areas, a softener pays back through extended water-heater and appliance life regardless of whether you upgrade to HPWH/tankless.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a water softener cost installed?

Basic salt-based softener (Whirlpool, Morton): $800–$2,000. Premium softener (Kinetico, Culligan): $2,300–$6,000. Salt-free conditioner: $1,100–$3,300. Combo softener + carbon: $1,800–$4,800. Whole-house RO: $5,000–$12,500. Annual salt costs run $30–$80 for a typical household.

Salt-based vs salt-free — which is better?

Salt-based actually softens (removes calcium and magnesium ions). Salt-free conditions the water — prevents scale formation but the minerals stay in solution. Salt-based wins if you want true soft water (slick feel, longer appliance life, less soap). Salt-free wins if you don’t want regular salt refills, can’t discharge to a septic system, or have mild hardness. Most plumbers and HPWH manufacturers recommend salt-based for hardness above 7 gpg.

Why install before a HPWH or tankless?

Hard water builds scale on the heat exchanger coils inside HPWHs and tankless units 3–5× faster than on traditional tank elements. Manufacturers void warranties if hardness exceeds 7–10 gpg without treatment. The softener premium often pays back in 5–8 years through extended HPWH/tankless life and lower maintenance.
